Mera Peak Climbing offers a memorable ascent to Nepal's highest trekking peak. Before the summit push, enjoy trekking off-the-beaten-path. Trek across the stunningly beautiful and isolated Hinku Valley and Makalu Barun National Park to reach the base of Mera Peak. Avoid a tiring return trek by chartering a helicopter from Khare to Lukla. Enjoy aerial views of the Hinku Valley and the Himalayan mountains from aboard.
Mera Peak has three summits – Mera North (6.476m), Mera Central (6,461m), and Mera South (6,065m). This climbing adventure will involve an ascent to the summit of Mera Central. Since the first ascent of Mera Central by Col. Jimmy Roberts and Sem Tenzing in 1953, several climbers have stood atop Mera Peak's central summit. Expedition groups prefer the central summit as its route is straightforward and more accessible.
Your journey begins from Kathmandu with a mountain flight to Lukla. You take the route off-the-beaten-path from Lukla and head towards the isolated Hinku valley. Enjoy the natural beauty of Khumbu in peace. Unlike the busy Everest trail, there will be no noisy crowds of trekkers clogging the path.
Experience walking through the Makalu Barun National Park, an ecological treasure house of rare Himalayan flora and fauna. Traverse pristine forests, high mountain passes, and dramatic glaciers of the Hinku Valley. Breathtaking scenery at every twist and turn will keep you motivated, however exhausted you may feel. En route savor gorgeous views of the five highest mountains in the world- Mount Everest, Lhotse, Kanchenjunga, Makalu, and Cho Oyu.
On Day 11, you begin your Mera Peak Climbing from Khare. You spend a night camping at Mera Peak High Camp and make the summit push from the High Camp. The initial section of the route is non-technical. You head up connected by a 'man rope'. Extreme cold, thin air, and strong gusts of wind could make your climb difficult.
The final 40 -50 meters to the summit is the most difficult involving some technical maneuvers. Once you reach the summit, enjoy the moment and savor the views. After taking pictures, you descend to High Camp and then to Khare.
From Khare, you board a helicopter and fly back to Lukla. During the flight, you can enjoy an aerial tour of the Khumbu mountains and glaciers. Your amazing adventure ends once you return to Kathmandu.
Mera Peak Climbing is recommended for novice climbers looking to ascend their first big Himalayan Mountain. With its straightforward route, challenging high-altitude environment, and elevation of 6461 meters, Mera Central offers the ideal summit. Mera Peak is also suitable for climbers looking for an acclimatization climb before trying out an eight-thousander.
Experienced Sherpa climbing guides who have summited Mount Everest and other high mountains will lead this Mera Peak climbing adventure.
The best seasons for Mera Peak Climbing are spring and autumn, when the weather generally remains stable. One can expect brief spells of rainfall in spring, but it's warmer and comfortable. There are bursts of color along the trail as rhododendrons and wildflowers bloom and add color. During autumn, the skies open up and offer crystal clear views of the mountains.

You make your way to the beautiful Upper Hinku Valley today. Savoring fantastic views of Kusum Kanguru and Mera Peak, you walk high above the treeline. The landscape looks barren as stubbly short grasses cover the hills.
Walking past kharkas or seasonal camps of nomadic yak herders, you see how the local yak herders shelter themselves from the elements. Because of the harsh conditions, there are no permanent human settlements at this altitude. Only a handful of spartan tea houses operated by some enterprising locals for trekkers stand in this isolated wilderness.
Stop at Gondishung for refreshment and Lungsumgba Gompa, a Buddhist shrine that is said to be more than a century old. At the gompa, prayers are offered by the Sherpas for protection and good weather. Later continue your trek and reach Thaknak after a short hike.

After leaving Khare, you walk on a rocky trail to Mera La. From the track, you can savor grand views of the three Mera summits – Mera Central(6461m), Mera North(6476m), and Mera South(6065m).
Commercial expedition groups choose Mera Central as it is the most doable among the three summits. You too will be heading up the central summit. A tiring ascent up the Mera glacier brings you to high camp. At this point, no technical climbing is needed. While the trail is not that difficult, the cold and the high elevation makes things difficult. Above 5000 meters, each step is a struggle.
On reaching Mera High Camp, the Sherpas will serve you a hot beverage and warm soup. Mera High Camp offers astounding views of the five highest mountains in the world- Mount Everest, Lhotse, Kanchenjunga, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. Gaurishankar, Baruntse, and Chamlang also appear close. Tonight you will be sleeping in a single tent.

Climbing starts at 1 AM, and you prepare yourself for the summit push. Before hitting the slopes, you rope up (the team will be secured by 'man-rope'). Walking roped up in a line, you head up at a rhythmic pace. Your guide will lead you across the Mera glacier. It is an easy ascent up a gradual incline.
The terrain is easy, with no technical maneuvers needed. But due to the decrease in oxygen levels, taking each step will seem difficult. The most challenging section is the last 40-50 meters to the summit. There is a steep incline, and you will have to use fixed rope and jumars to climb the snowy hump of the summit.
You reach the summit of Mera Peak by 9 or 10 AM. Savor your victory and take pictures. Mount Everest(8848m), Makalu(8481m), Lhotse(8516m), Kanchenjunga(8586m), and Cho Oyu(8201m) appear close enough from the summit. Afterwards descend to High Camp and warm yourself with a steaming cup of tea, coffee, or soup. Later head down to high camp and walk to Khare.
